Whether those curls are naturally all yours or you’ve enjoyed a gorgeous perm from one of our Suede Salon stylists, styling curly hair in the summer can be a bit tricky. Not only are there tips to do at home to keep your curly hair healthy, but you also need to take care in using the right hair care products to keep those curls silky soft, and manageable in the heat and humidity.
Condition Often, Shampoo Less. Although we’re typically more active in the summer, unless you’re sweating excessively or engaging in activities in dirt or sand, you still only need to shampoo your hair a couple of times a week. To revive your curls and keep them nourished, use a recommended moisturizing conditioner to both “wash & condition” your hair. Curls & Waves Hydrating Conditioner is specially formulated to nourish your hair and give your curl elasticity and bounce. Rinse with cool water to lock the moisture into the cuticles. Washing too often can strip your hair of its natural oils. However, when you do shampoo your hair, use a small amount of Curls & Waves Hydrating Shampoo for healthy, manageable curls.
Stay Hydrated Each Day. This can be a hard one, especially if you’re busy at work or running around enjoying the weather. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day – more in the heat of summer – will help to keep your skin and hair healthy. When your body lacks the proper hydration, your body takes moisture and nutrients from places such as your hair and skin. This can lead to your curly hair becoming dry, frizzy, and ultimately can cause breakage and limp curls. Your Suede hairstylist can also recommend some great hair products to help keep your hair nourished as well as deep conditioning treatments in the salon to protect your curls from becoming dry and frizzy.
Use UV Protection. It’s ingrained in us to cover our skin with sunscreen when going out in the sun, but it’s easy to forget about protecting our scalp and hair. A wide-brimmed or bucket hat offers the most protection while you’re out in the sun. You can also spray your hair with UV protection hair products or sunscreen. Your stylist can give you suggestions on products with an SPF rating that will protect your scalp and curls from UV rays.
Don’t Tie Back Wet Hair. Hair is most fragile when it’s wet. Pulling back your curly locks into a tight ponytail right after a shower, swimming, or the beach can cause damage and breakage which results in split ends, flyaway’s and frizz. Instead, apply a curl-defining styler such as CurlsDefineHer to provide a protective shield over each curl, leaving a soft smooth finish. You can use a headband or clip to keep hair out of your eyes while it air dries. Enjoy more definition to your curls and less frizz by drying it naturally. Then if you wish, collect your curls into a loose ponytail once dry.
