You might be loving this fall weather with your sweaters, boots, and hot homemade soup. As the temperature drops and the cold winds begin to blow in the next couple of months, you’ll begin to notice that the dry winter air is taking a toll on your skin and hair.
Late fall and winter is the time when your hair loses the most moisture from the dry, cold air and it becomes frizzy and your scalp becomes excessively dry. Now is the time to get the products you’ll need to start changing up your hair care routine so you’re ready before any damage to your hair begins.
Change the way you wash your hair. Your hair produces its own natural oils for keeping your hair nourished. However, shampooing your hair too often can strip your hair of these natural oils and moisture. Once or twice a week for shampooing may be all you need. Your Suede Salon stylist can recommend a mild shampoo designed for your hair and scalp type. Just one option is our Hydrate Shampoo, enriched with Aloe Vera, which will maintain the moisture balance to your hair for long-lasting hydration and nourishment.
Tend to your hair after washing. While you want to be gentle with wet hair, you don’t want to keep it wet when leaving the house or going to bed. Use a wide-tooth comb or a Paddle Brush to gently detangle wet and dry hair. Our paddle brush will also reduce static and prevent pulling on hair that can cause breakage.
Leaving the house with wet hair causes the hair shaft to expand, making it susceptible to breakage and wet hair in the cold weather can actually make your hair color fade quicker. Another big no-no is rubbing your hair harshly when towel-drying it. While it’s good to give your hair a break from heated styling tools, it’s better to air or lightly fan dry after gently toweling the excess water from your hair.
Condition your hair frequently. It’s important to condition your hair frequently with a good moisturizing conditioner to lock in the moisture and vital nutrients when your hair needs it most this winter. One of our recommended products is Prime – Moisture + Conditioner from Revive. It’s great for daily use and with its vitamin complex and botanical extracts, it creates stronger, thicker hair while increasing the shine and controlling the frizz for silky smooth hair.
Take the time to deep condition. We know you’re busy, but taking the time at least once a week to deep condition with a hair mask can keep your hair healthy all winter long. Kerasilk Reconstruct Intensive Repair Mask will provide lasting moisture and protection from the cold, dry winter air. It fortifies, reconstructs, and enhances resilience in just 5-10 minutes. Another great mask is K. Therapy Repair Nourishing Mask to hydrate and nourishes very dry hair and scalp to repair damage and keep your hair strong and healthy-looking.
Reduce frizz and static. The lack of moisture in the air during winter can make your hair staticky and frizzy. Continuous frizz and cause damage and breakage to your hair. A leave-in conditioner can control the frizz while adding moisture to your hair. Another way to tame the frizz is with a finishing product like De-frizz Oil that will smooth your hair after styling so it looks soft and manageable all day long.
Limit the styling. Applying too much heat to your hair is a recipe for damage, split-ends, and breakage. Since your hair is at its weakest during the winter, limiting the use of heated styling tools can help to keep your hair healthy and strong during the cold. When you do use heated hair straighteners, curling rods, and even blow-dryers, use a heat protection spray.
Increase your water intake and a balanced diet. We don’t think about how dry it is in the winter (with the rain and snow) but it’s easy to become dehydrated in winter which will affect your hair. Stay well hydrated in winter and be sure to eat a healthy, balanced diet to avoid any nutrient or vitamin deficiencies so your hair stays strong.
